Your Free
Paint Protection
Guide

Everything you need to know about protecting your car in Las Vegas. What each option does, what it doesn't do, how thick it is, and which one makes sense for your situation.

Most people have no idea what their actual options are when it comes to protecting their car's paint. The marketing around all of it is confusing on purpose.

This guide breaks it down clearly — what each option does, what it doesn't do, how thick it is, what it costs, and which one makes sense for your situation. By the time you finish this, you'll know more about paint protection than 90% of car owners.

No upsell. No pressure. Just straight information from people who do this every day in Las Vegas.

What You're
Actually Protecting.

Your car's exterior is made up of layers. Most people only think about the color — but what you're actually protecting is the clear coat, and everything underneath it.

1
Clear Coat

The outermost layer. Gives your car its gloss and depth — and takes the beating from sun, sand, heat, and elements every day. This is what we're protecting.

2
Base Coat

The actual color of your car. Damage rarely reaches this layer — but when it does, you're looking at a repaint.

3
Primer

Bonds the paint to the metal and provides corrosion resistance.

4
Metal (Substrate)

The body of the car itself. The goal of every protection product is to keep damage from ever reaching this layer.

Where Swirls and Scratches Come From

Almost every swirl and light scratch on a car comes from improper washing — dirty sponges, drive-through brushes, circular scrubbing. They drag particles across the clear coat and leave fine scratches that scatter light. That's the swirl pattern you see in direct sunlight.

Automatic car washes are one of the biggest culprits. The brushes are never fully cleaned between cars. They're dragging last week's dirt across your paint every single time.

Las Vegas makes this significantly worse. Intense UV, extreme heat, alkaline mineral-heavy water, and constant desert dust. Your clear coat is working harder here than almost anywhere else in the country.

Your Protection
Options Compared.

There are four main options. They are not the same category of product — four very different things at very different price points and protection levels.

Option Thickness Protection Level Warranty Price Range
Wax / Sealant Surface only Basic UV + minor water beading None $50–$150
Ceramic Coating 0.2 – 2.5 µm UV, chemical, hydrophobic. No impact or scratch resistance. 3–10 years $600–$2,000
Formula 1051 8–13 µm per layer (stackable) UV, chemical, impact, scratch. Adds material to clear coat. 10 years $2,500–$4,500
PPF 150–300 µm Highest impact & scratch. Highest maintenance cost. 1–10 years $2,300–$10,000+

Ceramic
Coating.

What It Is

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds chemically to your clear coat. At 0.2 to 2.5 µm thick, it creates a thin but durable layer that hardens on your paint. Unlike wax or sealant that sit on the surface and wear away, a ceramic coating bonds and stays.

It's an excellent product for what it does. The key is understanding exactly what that is — and what it isn't.

What It Does Well
  • Easier maintenance — contaminants can't bond as easily
  • UV protection — slows clear coat breakdown and fading
  • Chemical resistance — repels bird droppings, bug splatter, tree sap
  • Enhanced gloss — adds depth and shine beyond stock paint
  • Hydrophobic surface — water beads and sheets off
What It Does Not Do
  • No impact resistance — rock chips reach your paint
  • No scratch resistance — keys and abrasion still scratch through
  • Annual maintenance required to keep warranty valid
3–10 Year Warranty  ·  Annual maintenance required
$600–$2,000

Paint Protection
Film (PPF).

What It Is

Paint Protection Film — also called PPF or clear bra — is a thick urethane film physically applied over your paint. At 150 to 300 µm thick, it is the thickest paint protection option available and creates a physical barrier between your paint and the world.

What It Does Well
  • Highest impact resistance of any option
  • Highest scratch resistance of any option
  • Self-healing — minor surface scratches can disappear with heat
What to Know First
  • Highest maintenance cost of any option
  • Yellowing over time — especially in Las Vegas heat
  • Edges can lift in extreme heat — installation quality matters
  • PPF does not last forever — will eventually need replacement
  • Bad installs create bubbles, visible edges, and early failure
